A mechanised batch screening method for the detection of bacteriuria.

چکیده
In the modem hospital microbiology department, it is not feasible to investigate fully all routine urine specimens for the detection of bacterial infection of the urinary tract. Although increased numbers of leucocytes in the urine may enable selection of urines for comprehensive culture techniques, including direct antibiotic sensitivity testing, it is totally unacceptable to reject any specimen with a normal leucocyte count without performing a screening culture. An advance in efficient screening, using blotting paper strips, was described by Leigh and Williams' and is now successfully used in many hospital laboratories. The method now described however, involves the mechanical inoculation of 25 urine specimens simultaneously onto an agar surface in a way which reduces both time and materials to a minimum.

Screening for bacteriuria: Microstix and dipslides.
The Microstix system has been tested, in parallel with dipslides, for suitability as a screening technique for the detection of bacteriuria. Results obtained using each method on 228 urine specimens were assessed by comparison with the results of quantitative counts. Dipslides had a higher sensitivity (86-7%) than Microstix. The best specificity (100%) was obtained from those results (77-6%) wh...
متن کاملEvaluation of a new sensitive nitrite test as a reliable screening tool for bacteriuria.
A new sensitive nitrite test, the SRN test, was evaluated for its suitability as a reliable screening technique for the detection of bacteriuria. The SRN test was compared to a currently available nitrite test, the Microstix nitrite test, and the results obtained with both nitrite tests were assessed in comparison with the results of the quantitative culture method. Of 158 cases of significant ...
متن کاملEvaluation of a nitrite test kit (Stat-test) for the detection of significant bacteriuria.
A commercially marketed nitrite test kit (Stat-test) for the rapid detection of significant bacteriuria has been evaluated and found to have failed to detect 50% of all cases of significant bacteriuria and 46% of significant bacteriuria associated with nitrate-reducing organisms. The number of false positive results are negligible. The Stat-test, used in its present form, cannot be recommended ...
متن کاملEvaluation of dipstrips, direct gram stain and pyuria as screening tests for the detection of bacteriuria.
Two hundred and fifty cases of clinically suspected urinary tract infection were analysed for the detection of bacteriuria. Parameters studied included direct Gram staining, pyuria on microscopic examination of uncentrifuged urine and dip strip method for the detection of blood, protein, nitrite and leucocyte esterase. Significant bacteriuria (colony count 10(5) per ml) was found in 112 cases w...
متن کاملStudy of Asymptomatic bacteriuria in pregnant women and antibiotic _ sensitivity of isolated bacteria in Tabriz 1996
Urinary tract infection ( UTI) is a common disease , which may occur as Asymptomatic in both sexes at any age. Asymptomatic bacteriuria in pregnant women can particularly cause problems for both mother and her fetus. Therefore in this study 950 pregnant women who have been referred to Tabriz university and private, gynaecology clinics for routine pregnancy cares, and had no sign s of UTI were s...
